Rest in Peace, Al Runsvold

Al Runsvold’s Award of the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism.

Box+Foam would like to remember and honor the remarkable life of Al Runsvold, a man of unwavering courage, unspoken heroism, and enduring love. Al's journey through life was marked by his selflessness, his dedication to his country, and his deep faith in God.

In February of 1966, Al answered the call to serve his nation and was inducted into the Army. With honor and dedication, he embarked on a path that would lead him to far-off lands, experiences that would shape him forever.

Not content with just serving, Al pushed himself to excel. He chose to attend Airborne Jump School, becoming a paratrooper and a proud member of the 101st Airborne. Against the counsel of his superiors, Al volunteered to serve in Vietnam, demonstrating his unyielding commitment to duty. Before deploying to Vietnam, Al undertook Jungle Warfare training in the Philippines, a decision that he later believed had a profound impact on his survival in the jungles of Vietnam.

For a year, Al bravely fought in the jungle of Vietnam. His commitment to his comrades and his country was unwavering. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism with the V device, symbolizing valor, as well as the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during combat. The Army Commendation Medal further recognized his sustained acts of heroism and meritorious service.

Though Al was a soldier of remarkable bravery, he rarely spoke of his experiences in Vietnam, or even his time in the Army. It was only when he faced Agent Orange-caused cancer that he began to share his stories. The horrors he encountered deep in the jungle left scars that ran deeper than the physical wounds, and he was later diagnosed with PTSD as flashbacks haunted his life.

Al's battle did not end with his military service. He faced another formidable enemy in the form of illness, a consequence of Agent Orange exposure. Although myxofibrosarcoma and Parkinson’s disease eventually took their toll, Al faced these challenges with strength and fortitude.

Al eventually joined Box+Foam as our Washington-based salesperson. His talent for connecting with people, understanding their needs, and offering solutions made him stand out in his profession. Al had an innate ability to build genuine relationships with his customers, earning their trust and respect. His dry sense of humor often worked wonders, breaking the ice and putting people at ease. Al's salesmanship was a reflection of his commitment to excellence in all aspects of his life. His success in this field not only provided for his family but also allowed him to extend his generosity to others.

“I knew Al Runsvold for over 30 years. When I reflect on Al’s life, I want to be like him. He was kind. He was patient. And he was noble. Al was devoted to everybody that touched his life. He genuinely enjoyed working with people and being helpful. He left this world quietly and those that knew him will smile when they think of him. I wish I had told him that he was inspirational. I can picture his reaction though: He would have rolled his eyes, chuckled, and said, ‘Really...Me?’” - Kurt Rozek, Box+Foam President

Yet, beyond his military service and vibrant career, Al was a loving family man. He embraced the vibrant and boisterous family he joined through marriage, finding joy in the laughter and togetherness they shared. His dry, quiet humor was a cherished part of their lives.

Al's faith in God was the cornerstone of his existence, guiding him through life's trials and triumphs. It sustained him through the darkest days of his illness, providing comfort and hope that he would ultimately find his reward in heaven.

“It was an honor for me to be with him as he made his transition from earth to heaven - One minute in pain, the next in a glorified body.” - Christian Runsvold, Al’s wife

In the legacy of Al Runsvold, we find a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the strength of faith, and the enduring power of love. He will be remembered not only as a soldier but as a loving husband, a proud father, and a man of unwavering faith. May his memory inspire us all to live our lives with courage, love, and devotion to others, just as Al did throughout his remarkable journey.

Rest in peace, Al.
